Simons-Balseiro School and Workshop Advanced Aspects of QFT

Exploring foundations, flows, and frontiers on the 40th anniversary of the c-theorem.

Dates May 18–27, 2026
Region Bariloche, Argentina
Deadline April 7, 2026
01. Overview

The c-Theorem at 40

Organized at the Instituto Balseiro / Centro Atómico Bariloche, in the Andean foothills of Patagonia, this event marks four decades since the formulation of the c-theorem.

The meeting aims to bring together leading researchers and students to discuss foundational and modern methods in quantum field theory. Topics will include structural aspects of QFT, renormalization group flows, irreversibility, and developments in high-energy theory.

The format combines lectures for advanced students and researchers, with research oriented talks and informal discussions.

The Instituto Balseiro hosts active research groups at the Centro Atómico Bariloche:

The emphasis is on ideas and methods that have shaped our understanding of quantum field theory.

04. Visitor Guide

Bariloche for Visiting Scientists

San Carlos de Bariloche sits in the heart of Argentine Patagonia, on the shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake and surrounded by the Andes. It is a beautiful, small city well accustomed to hosting international visitors. Here is practical advice for scientists traveling from abroad.

Getting Here

Bariloche's airport (BRC, Teniente Luis Candelaria) has daily flights from Buenos Aires, both from Aeroparque (AEP) and Ezeiza (EZE). The flight takes about two hours. Aerolíneas Argentinas, FlyBondi, and JetSMART operate these routes. International visitors typically connect through Buenos Aires.

  • Book domestic flights early — May is off-season but seats can fill up
  • EZE to AEP transfer (if connecting): Tienda León shuttle or taxi (~45 min)
  • BRC airport to city center: taxis and transfer services (~15 min)

Visa & Entry Requirements

Most nationalities (EU, US, Canada, UK, Japan, Australia, Latin America) do not need a visa for stays under 90 days. Check the Argentine Migration website for your nationality. We provide invitation letters upon request.

  • Bring your passport (valid for at least 6 months)
  • US citizens: check for reciprocity fee requirements
  • Keep a printed copy of your invitation letter

Getting Around

The Instituto Balseiro is at km 9.5 along Avenida Bustillo, the scenic road along the lake. Public buses run frequently. You need a SUBE card (rechargeable transport card), available at kiosks downtown.

  • Bus lines 10 and 20 go along Av. Bustillo to the Institute
  • Taxis and remises (pre-booked cars) are reliable and affordable
  • Ride-hailing apps: Cabify, DiDi, and Uber all operate in Bariloche
  • Downtown to IB: ~20 min by car, ~35 min by bus

Where to Stay

May is autumn and low season, so hotel prices are considerably lower than in ski season. We recommend staying along Av. Bustillo (km 1–10) for easy access to the Institute, or in the city center for more restaurants and services.

  • Budget-friendly hostels and cabañas in the km 1–5 range
  • Limited on-campus housing may be available for students (TBA)
  • The organizers can provide a list of recommended accommodations

Money & Practical Tips

Argentina uses the peso (ARS). Exchange rates fluctuate — check current rates before traveling. Credit cards are widely accepted. ATMs dispense pesos but may have daily limits.

  • Bring US dollars or euros as backup
  • Notify your bank before traveling to avoid card blocks
  • Tipping: 10% in restaurants is customary
  • Power plugs: Type I (three-prong), 220V / 50Hz

Weather & Things to Do

Late May in Bariloche is late autumn. Expect daytime temperatures of 5–12°C (40–54°F) and cold nights near 0°C. Rain and occasional snow are possible. Bring warm layers and a waterproof jacket.

  • Stunning scenery: lakes, coihue forests, snow-capped Andes peaks
  • Famous artisanal chocolate — Calle Mitre has many chocolate shops
  • Excursions: Circuito Chico, Cerro Campanario, Colonia Suiza
  • Excellent local craft beer scene along the lakefront
  • See more about Bariloche in autumn on the official tourism site
Note for all participants: The campus of the Centro Atómico Bariloche is a secure facility. Please carry your passport or ID at all times when accessing the campus. The organizing committee will arrange entry permissions in advance — please provide your details during registration.
